DESCRIPTION:Dr. Benjamin's lecture is the inaugural event in our "Generative Future" series centered on Critical Language Inquiry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. Generative Futures begins from a humanities-driven conviction: meaning does not simply appear. It emerges through language broadly understood—through words\, images\, sounds\, code\, and other symbolic systems through which we think\, learn\, teach\, and create.\n\n\n\n\n\nRuha Benjamin is Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University\, founding director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab\, and author of the award-winning books Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code (2019) and Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want (2022)\, 2023 winner of the Stowe Prize\,among many other publications. Her work investigates the social dimensions of science\, medicine\, and technology with a focus on the relationship between innovation and inequity\, health and justice\, knowledge and power. In Imagination: A Manifesto (2024)\, Ruha calls on us to take imagination seriously as a site of struggle and a place of possibility for reshaping the future.\n\n\n\nRuha earned her BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Spelman College\, MA and PhD in Sociology from UC Berkeley\, and completed postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA’s Institute for Society &amp\; Genetics and Harvard’s Science\, Technology &amp\; Society Program. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including from the American Council of Learned Societies\, National Science Foundation\, Marguerite Casey Foundation Freedom Scholar Award\, and the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton.\n\n\n\nHer work is published in numerous journals\, including Science\, Technology\, and Human Values\; Policy &amp\; Society\; Ethnicity &amp\; Health\; and the Annals of the American Academy of Social and Political Science and reported on in national and international news outlets\, including NBC News\, Fast Company\, WIRED\, Slate Magazine\, CBC\, CNET\, The Guardian\, National Geographic\, and Nature. This event is open to the general public. https://www.coloradocollege.edu/newsevents/calendar/details.html?EventID=68842&amp\;booking=2\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/10148
