Loading a website? Sending an email? Fastest route to dim sum? Doomscrolling? It’s algorithms all the way down... It hasn’t always been this way - mechanical computers started gaining traction in the 1800s\, and it was a total nightmare to install Instagram on them. Throughout our lives we each use a variety of tools to help us with computation\, starting from the very first time we count out a sum on our fingers. What other computational tools do we come into contact with\, and what sorts of problems do they help us solve? Do computers need to have wires and blinking lights\, or can we build them out of other components? Marbles and ramps? Inside a Minecraft world? Cellular automata? Could we hijack a game of Magic the Gathering against an unsuspecting opponent\, and force them to compute arbitrary functions? Come find out!\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/10218 DTEND:20261002T193000Z LOCATION:Tutt Science 122 - Lecture Hall (Social Science) DTSTART:20261002T183000Z SUMMARY:Fearless Friday: Everything is Computer with Professor Ben Nye UID:a006067d-3eb2-4110-813d-b2cde2145078 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
