DESCRIPTION:Art Department Artist Talk with Joey Zhao:\n\nBuddhism\, Heaven and the Underworld: The Universes ofHunping \n\nHunpingis a type of funerary jar mass-produced in southeastern China during the third to early fourth century. The majority of Buddhist images made before the mid-fourth century exist as decorations onhunping. Scholars often consider the buddha-like figures onhunpingas “a variant form of Daoist immortals\,” rather than examining them through the angle of Buddhist doctrine and paradise. I argue thathunpingembody the Chinese theme of “ascending to Heaven through theaxis mundi” and thosehunpingwith Buddhist images embody a proselytization strategy devised by early clergies to identify the Chineseaxis mundiMount Kunlun with its Buddhist counterpart Mount Sumeru and identify the Chinese Heaven withTrayastrimsa\, the particular heaven right above Mount Sumeru. This event is open to the general public. https://www.coloradocollege.edu/newsevents/calendar/details.html?EventID=51256&amp\;booking=1SEQUENCE:0\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/5384
