DESCRIPTION:Learn how we can empirically verify concepts as nebulous as what the different ways of expressing love are! Professor Flavia Sancier-Barbosa of CC's own Mathematics and Computer Science Department will discuss how to use statistics to condense observed variables into a smaller number of unobserved variables (factors).\n\n11/11/22 • 3:00 - 4:00 PM\nTutt Science Center 229\n\nFull abstract:\nFactor analysis is a statistical technique that is used to model a set of observed variables into a smaller number of unobserved variables (factors). One of its applications is the development and validation of survey instruments that aim to measure one or more hypothetical concepts (constructs).  In a 1992 book\, “The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate\,” Gary Chapman identified five main ways partners can demonstrate love to one another: Acts of Service\, Gifts\, Touch\, Words of Affirmation\, and Quality Time. In another 1992 book\, Chapman claims that the key to marital happiness is identifying and ‘speaking’ your partner’s preferred Love Language. Even though his books became very popular\, his claim has not been empirically validated. This presentation will give an overview of factor analysis and how it can be used in the process of testing Chapman’s Love Languages claim.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/5614
