Mercado and Javier F. Arredondo\, were murdered by Mexican Army soldiers after a confrontation with members of a drug trafficking organization. The members of the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (Secretaría de Defensa Nacional – SEDENA) also manipulated the bodies\, placed weapons on them\, and later declared that the victims were “hitmen armed to the teeth”. Even though afterward the government recognized Jorge and Javier were students\, for nine years different government institutions\, SEDENA included\, maintained that they were hitmen.  \n \nEight years after these events\, the filmmaker\, Alberto Arnaut Estrada\, premiered the documentary Hasta los dientes (Armed to the Teeth\, 2018)\, in which he narrates the story of Jorge and Javier. And one year later (March 19th\, 2019) the Mexican government and SEDENA gave a federal public apology in which they recognized their responsibility for these extrajudicial executions. The documentary was one of the key factors which contributed to this act of reparation. This talk focuses on establishing the ways Hasta los dientes made use of audiovisual testimonies and spaces of exhibition as means to create what Jacques Rancière defines as an intolerable image: an image that makes spectators incapable of looking at it without experiencing pain or outrage. The talk argues that despite the prevailing climate of impunity in Mexico\, the creation of the intolerable image made the film an indigestible form of art for the national judicial system\, which ultimately led to the political action. \n\nThere will be time for questions following the talk.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/5959
