DESCRIPTION:Dr. Luis Martín-Estudillo is the author of The Rise of Euroskepticism: Europe and Its Critics in Spanish Culture (2018\; inaugural NEH Open Book Award).\n \nFor decades\, the impact of the project of European integration on the lives of ordinary citizens was increasingly significant but stirred little emotion. It took the serious crises that followed 2007 for the Union to occupy a space on the affective landscape of the continent. Game-changing factors included the so-called Great Recession\, with its growing North-South divide\, and Brexit\, the most consequential example of Euroskepticism to date. Those challenges moved many artists to reflect on a political experiment which\, in spite of its historical relevance\, had been largely absent from their imaginations. As a consequence of the perceived threats to the EU project\, some of them vindicated it as a pinnacle of pacifist and democratic traditions\, while others denounced the darkest sides of what they saw as an elitist agenda. This growing corpus allows for alternative assessments of the European project that go beyond quantitative instruments. Artistic responses engage this political phenomenon in ways that attempt to mobilize affects as well as reason\, contributing to generate awareness about the Union’s strengths and failures.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/6117
