DESCRIPTION:Seven Rivers and a Sea: the Interconnected Histories of France\, Africa\, and the Americas with Laurent Dubois. \n\nDescription: \n\nLaurent Dubois is the John L Nau III Bicentennial Professor in History and Principles of Democracy at the University of Virginia and the Director for Academic Affairs of the Democracy Initiative. \n\nFrom the early 1500s through to the era of the Haitian Revolution and the Louisiana Purchase\, French empire in the Americas reshaped cultural\, economic\, intellectual and political life on both sides of the Atlantic. But the legacies of this experience\, including its impacts on the history of the United States\, are often overlooked. In this talk\, Laurent Dubois will explore how the French empire was structured during this period\, focusing on the interconnections between seven river systems in Europe\, Africa and the Americas\, and reflect on how it shaped the modern world.”\n\nSponsored by the W.
