DESCRIPTION:\nThe illustrious mathematics honor society known as Pi Mu Epsilon is inducting new members in a ceremony on Wednesday the 17th! Kicking off the event\, Dr. Robin Wilson will give a talk on where math comes from. Turns out\, it's a lot of places from all over the world!\n\nAfter the talk (likely going until about 5 PM)\, there will be an induction ceremony for students at the top of their mathematical game\, and then cake and refreshments.\n\nRated PG: Some undergraduate math experience may be helpful\, but the talk should be fairly accessible!\n\nFull abstract:\nWhere did mathematics come from? What number systems were used? What calculations were carried out\, and how accurate were they? What problems were tackled\, and why? What forms did arithmetic\, geometry\, and algebra take in ancient times? This talk introduces the varying mathematical activities of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia before proceeding to the mathematics of ancient China and India and the calendar concerns of Mayans of central America.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/6610
