DESCRIPTION:During the eighteenth century\, intellectuals in Europe argued that they were living in a period of Enlightenment and that society could achieve what they called “perfectibility.” Were they right? Was the Enlightenment the birthplace of meritocracy\, toleration\, and freedom\, as some have argued\, or was it rather the precursor of intellectual rigidity\, modern racism and anti-Semitism\, and totalitarianism\, as others have maintained? Who was included and who was excluded in these narratives of Enlightenment and possibility? Does it even make sense to discuss it as a coherent movement?\n \nHY287 Enlightenment Cultures will examine the legacy of the Enlightenment and its continued impact on the world we live in. \n\nMeets the Historical Perspectives designation.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/7194
