DESCRIPTION:Attend a research talk by a tenure track job candidatein the Economics and Business Department\, Jun Yang Tang\, on Wednesday\, November 1st at 1:15pm in Palmer 118. Please find more details below.\n\nPresenter: Jun Yang Tang\, PhD Candidate at Drexel University\nTitle: General Counsel Prominence &amp\; ESG Disclosure\nAbstract: In today's largely unregulated and voluntary ESG disclosure landscape\, managers have the latitude to balance the costs and benefits of disclosure to arrive at the optimal extent of ESG disclosure for their respective firms. This study explores whether general counsel (GC) prominence\, as proxied by the presence of a GC among the five highest-paid corporate executives\, impacts the transparency of ESG disclosure. Recent surveys suggest that GCs lead ESG initiatives operationally\, engage in disclosure review\, and harbor concerns about legal liabilities related to ESG disclosure. Preliminary results indicate a negative association between GC prominence and ESG disclosure transparency\, particularly in high-litigation industries. I interpret this finding as evidence that prominent GCs perform their corporate gatekeeping role by reducing the likelihood of being sued for misrepresentations and half-truths in ESG disclosure.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/7276
