DESCRIPTION:Join the Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies on Thursday\, February 22nd at 4:00pm for Latinx Civil Wars\, a talk by Dr. Jesse Alemán. This talk will take place in the Max Kade Theater in Armstrong Hall. \n\nThis talk examines how the process of becoming Latinx in the mid-nineteenth century United States is akin to civil war. It makes this case by analyzing the Spanish and English language letters\, diaries\, manifestos\, autobiographies\, and other cultural ephemera by Latinx writers who participated in the US Civil War or commented on its related political conflicts. These materials\, many of which have been recovered from archival holdings\, capture the struggle of acculturation\, the fissures of disidentification\, the displacement of separation\, and the disorientation from home and family that characterize the conflicted record of becoming Latinx across the United States\, Mexico\, Cuba\, and the Confederacy. The lecture will explore why some groups\, like Hispanos\, fought for the Union when New Mexico was not part of the Union\, and how the related problems of slaver\, anti-Blackness\, and anti-Indigeneity vex the history of Latinx identity formation and national affiliations during the Civil War years. The presentation will include slides of photos\, letters\, art\, and other matter that form the archival bedrock of our Latinx civil war histories. \n\nDr. Jesse Alemán is a Professor of English and Presidential Teaching Fellow at the University of New Mexico. The author of over two-dozen articles\, he’s published The Woman in Battle (University of Wisconsin\, 2001)\; Empire and the Literature of Sensation (Rutgers University Press\, 2007)\; and The Latino Nineteenth Century (NYU Press\, 2013). He is currently the 2023-2024 Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester\, MA\, where he is completing his book\, Latinx Civil Wars.\n\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/7705
