DESCRIPTION:\nLanguage justice asserts our fundamental right to communicate\, understand\, and be understood in the language we prefer and in which we feel most articulate and powerful. It rejects the notion of the supremacy of one language\, and it recognizes that language can be both a tool of oppression as well as an important part of exercising autonomy and advancing social justice. In this lecture\, applied linguist Dr. Uju Anya discusses language justice problems and calls for prioritizing civic engagement\, public understanding\, and promotion of sound research-based language policies to advance social justice.\n\nDr. Uju Anya is a scholar of new language learning and Black experiences in multilingualism. She is an Associate Professor of Second Language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/8658
