DESCRIPTION:This opening keynote lecture for Living Dead Under Settler Colonialism: A Zombie Symposium for the Liberal Arts explores the intersections of settler colonialism\, Indigenous survival\, and apocalyptic narratives through an analysis of The Walking Dead and post apocalyptic zombies in pop culture and media. It discusses the portrayal of violence and survival in the zombie apocalypse drawing parallels to the historical and ongoing experiences of California Indian peoples to emphasize that settler colonialism is not a relic of the past but a present and future concern\, urging for a reimagining of societal structures that includes Indigenous perspectives and sovereignty. This work challenges participants to confront colonial legacies and envision decolonized futures.\nLunch provided. Free and open to the public.\nDr. Cutcha Risling Baldy (Hupa/Yurok/Karuk) is an associate professor and department chair of Native American Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt\, and author of We Are Dancing For You\, awarded Best First Book in Native American and Indigenous Studies.
