DESCRIPTION:The second panel of Living Dead Under Settler Colonialism: A Zombie Symposium for the liberal arts is "Zombie Temporality in Postracial Times." Leif Sorensen opens the panel by exploring "zombie temporality" and the question of narrative form in relation to Mark Rifkin's notion of "settler time" to consider how zombies figure in different temporalities of crisis within contemporary literary works about zombies. Susana Loza will discuss the themes of zombies\, slaves\, and black magic in the television series American Horror Story: Coven. Christina Leza concludes the session with a discussion of the symbolic representation of living death\, racial capitalism\, and the consumption of bodies in works by hip hop artist Childish Gambino. \nCookies\, coffee\, and tea will be available.\n\nLeif Sorensen is a professor of English at CSU Fort Collins and author of Ethnic Modernism and the Making of US Literary Multiculturalism (Palgrave\, 2016). His recent work includes publications on Colson Whitehead's zombie novel Zone One\, Richard Hell's punk self-fashioning in Postmodern Culture\, and non-human apocalyptic fiction. Susana Loza is a professor of Critical Race\, Gender\, and Media Studies\; and the author of Speculative Imperialisms: Monstrosity and Masquerade in Postracial Times (Lexington Books\, 2017). Her research explores the social construction of race and sex in speculative media\; power\, privilege\, and cultural appropriation\; gender and ethnic performativity in digital spaces\; and the post-racial turn in popular culture. Christina Leza is an associate professor of Anthropology at Colorado College and author of Divided Peoples: Policy\, Activism\, and Indigenous Identities on the U.S.-Mexico Border (University of Arizona\, 2019).
