DESCRIPTION:The first panel of Living Dead Under Settler Colonialism: A Zombie Symposium for the liberal arts is "Zombie Biopolitics." Elizabeth Dillon opens the panel with research addressing the zombification of labor in racial capitalism. Katherine Sugg will discuss "abjections of apocalypse" in addressing the relationship of zombies to liberal agency and settler logics. Ess Pokornowski concludes the panel by exploring the zombie's role in acknowledging and exploring the large-scale atrocity undergirding contemporary life in wealthy nations of the Global North and the West and\, on the other hand\, attempting to deny and/or absolve complicity in them. \nCookies\, coffee\, and tea from Bon Appetit.\n\nElizabeth Maddock Dillon is a distinguished professor of English at Northeastern University and the author of New World Drama: The Performative Commons in the Atlantic World\, 1649–1849 (Duke University Press\, 2014). She is currently working on her book Gender and Racial Capitalism: Atlantic Geographies of Sexual and Social Reproduction as a Harvard Radcliffe Institute fellow. Katherine Sugg is a Professor Emerita of English at Central Connecticut State University and the author of Apocalypse and Heroism in Popular Culture: Allegories of White Masculinity in Crisis (McFarland Press\, 2022). She specializes in narrative and cultural studies of the Americas and the intersections of political theory and aesthetics in literature\, media\, popular culture\, and performance. Ess Pokornowski is a program manager of the Justice Initiatives program at Ithaka S+R\, studying how policy\, technology\, and practice intersect in higher education in prisons. Her work focuses on issues of censorship and self-censorship\, and educational access and equity as well as how power\, violence\, and identity intersect in culture\, politics\, and science.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/8888
