DESCRIPTION:\n\nPlease join us for When S/He is not Nora- Chinese Theatres and Cosmopolitanism in Post WW1 America on December 3rd at 2:30 p.m. in the Cornerstone Arts Center\, Film Screening Room. \n\nThis talk examines the early transnational theatre experiments of Hong Shen (1894–1955) – a pioneering playwright and one of the founders of modern Chinese drama–through his English language plays The Wedded Husband and Rainbow (1919)\, the first of their kind written and staged in the United States by a Chinese national.\n\nAbout Man He\n\nAssociate Professor of Chinese and Chair of the Department of Asian Languages\,\nLiteratures\, and Cultures at Williams College. Trained at The Ohio State University in modern Chinese literature with a focus on Chinese theatre history and historiography\, her research explores modern Chinese drama and performance culture. Her book\, Backstaging Modern Chinese Theatre: Intellectuals\, Amateurs\, and Cultural Entrepreneurs\, 1910s–1940s\, was published by the University of Michigan Press in July 2025.
