DESCRIPTION:Asiantowns in Latin America: Food Tourism and Postcolonial Desire in Social Media\nIn recent years\, some social media posts highlighting Asian urban enclaves - or “Asiantowns” - in Latin America have gone viral on Spanish- and Portuguese-language digital platforms\, particularly those focused on food tourism. This trend is especially notable in metropolises like Lima\, Peru\, and São Paulo\, Brazil\, which host the largest Asian communities in Latin America. Lima's Chinatown (Spanish: Barrio Chino de Lima) and São Paulo's Japantown (Portuguese: Bairro “Oriental” da Liberdade) were initially established as community-oriented spaces that\, over time\, have become transnational hubs for diplomacy\, international commerce\, and cultural exchange programs between Asia and Latin America. From the 1970s to the 1990s\, these ethnic enclaves underwent significant architectural renovations to evoke a sense of “a piece of the ‘Orient’ in Latin America\,” thereby increasing their appeal to local and international visitors. This urban renovation led to a significant displacement of street vendors and low-income residents\, mainly from racialized communities such as Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous groups. In this presentation\, I examine how social media content about Lima's Chinatown and São Paulo's Japantown promotes a “postcolonial desire” and reinforces dominant racial imaginaries in Latin America.\n\nBio:\nHenrique Yagui Takahashi is an Andrew W.
