DESCRIPTION:Preview Block 8 Course SW244: Museums of the Southwest\n3:30 - 4:30 pm\nWednesday\, January 28\nFine Arts Center\n \nInterested in museums? Looking for an engaging 8th Block class? \n \nJoin Visiting Professor Savanah Pennell for an interactive preview of her Block 8 class: SW244: Museums of the Southwest: Cultures and Communities. Taught by Chicana artist\, researcher\, and curator Savanah Pennell in a museum gallery at the FAC\, this course includes field trips and opportunities to meet artists and professionals in the museum field. \n \nAbout the Class: In this course students will examine the role of museums as institutions that preserve and present culture\, and how they craft narratives about communities and cultures of the Southwest. They will interrogate what the role of a museum within society is and investigate how it replicates systems that are intertwined with colonialism. Through close viewings of objects\, discussions with artists and museum professionals\, and exploring alternative art spaces\, we will unpack the history of art institutions in the region and consider how we can decolonize the traditional museum.\n\n\nAbout the Professor: This course will be taught by block visitor Savanah Pennell\, a Chicana artist\, researcher\, and curator. Her scholarship focuses on both contemporary Chicanx art of the southwest and historical Spanish Colonial devotional art produced in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. As an artist\, her work explores Chicana identity and aesthetics related to spirituality\, memory\, and nostalgia.\n\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/9568
