DESCRIPTION:Professor Rob McConkey from CSU Pueblo is presenting THIS FRIDAY at 3PM in the Tutt Science Lecture Hall (TSC 122)! \nTalk abstract:\n\nWe begin our story by introducing knots a mathematical object which is true to its name\, a rope tangled up with the ends fused together. What makes this story so compelling is the challenge of differentiating knot diagrams\, while seemingly simple turns out to be a truly challenging problem. We will talk about how knot theorists have approached this problem and some interesting families of knots. Then we will consider a new knot invariant Theta discovered by Bar-Natan and van der Veen and how traffic on the knot can be used to calculate this invariant. This is joint work with L. Seaton (Mich St.). \n\nHis research interests are in Knot theory and has been working on relations between fundamental knot invariants and quantum link invariants. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in April 2024.\n\nhttps://today.coloradocollege.edu/events/9633
