DESCRIPTION:Join CC Visiting Associate Professor of EconomicsMichaël Bonnal for the Block 2 Faculty Lunch talk\, "The Hidden Hand of Political Institutions in Technological Progress. How governance shapes the adoption and diffusion of technology across 175 countries\, 1975–2015” on Tuesday\, Oct.6\, from 12:15-1:30 p.m. in Bemis Great Hall. Faculty and staff are invited to attend.\n\nRegistration is requiredby 5 p.m. on Wednesday\, Sept. 30. Lunch will be provided.\n\nReach out to Kinsey Fischer with any questions. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\nDo political institutions determine whether societies adopt new technology? In this talk\, Michaël Bonnal (Economics) presents findings from a 40-year study of 175 countries showing that concentrated political power — whether in a dominant executive or an entrenched legislature — tends to slow technology diffusion\, while more surprisingly\, greater electoral competition is linked tofewer patents. The research also reveals a partisan divide: left-leaning governments tend to drive high-tech exports and innovation\, while right-leaning governments are more associated with broad adoption of existing technologies like mobile and internet access. The paper argues that institutional design deserves far more attention as a lever for closing global living-standard gaps.\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Michaël Bonnal is an economist at Colorado College whose education spans France\, the UK\, and the US\, including a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Alabama. His research\, published in journals such as theJournal of Labor Research andReview of Development Economics\, examines how political institutions\, corruption\, and inequality shape economic and technological outcomes. He previously taught at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and the University of Paris PSL\, and now lives in Denver with his family.\n\n\n\n\n\nFaculty Lunch Series 26-27:\n\nThe Faculty Lunch Series is sponsored by the Academic Events Committee (AEC) and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.
